I am planning on traveling with a group in late May to Oaxaca. Luckily all transfers, hotels, and most meals are already arranged. I have been entranced by what I've read about Oaxaca. Based on the recent reports of the death of the Americans near Juarez in the media, a lot of fear has been generated about the safety of Americans in Mexico. From what I've read online it seems as if Oaxaca is fairly safe, but are there now undercurrents of danger with the increasing friction between gangs and the whole narcotics issue?
I also read about a massacre of about 13 people in a village in Oaxaca state in February. Any comments by those of you who have been there recently or are there are most welcome.

We just returned from spending about two weeks in Oaxaca City and St. Agustinillo and had a magical and wonderful time. Oaxaca City is charming with fabulous food and many wonderful artisans who create beautiful weaving, wood carved animals and pottery. The forum people are right about how safe it is in Oaxaca.
She and her husband, Javier gave us a wonderful day tour of the villages where the wood carving and rug weaving are done. It was the highlight of our trip. I can't wait to return to Oaxaca and stay much longer. I hope you have a great time. There is a group of Oaxacan men in their 20's and 30's who are very interested in foreign white girls.
The most base of them do it for economic advantage my attorney has heard two of them discuss that marrying a foreigner and leaving Oaxaca is their plan for economic security and the others for sex. Or help with getting visas to other countries. Women are interested in foreign men as Oaxacan men are sexually selfish don't give oral sex but expect it, don't always use condoms and are perceived as not being macho jerks. I haven't heard any of my women friends want foreigners for immigration, just sex and romance.
