Police have seized hundreds of kilograms of allegedly stolen kauri gum in a raid on a Whangarei massage parlour. On Tuesday, a search of the Scarlet Lounge found banana boxes, fish bins and sacks filled with chunks of unpolished Kauri gum worth thousands of dollars. More gum was seized when police searched a rural property south of the city at Oakleigh on the same day. Oakleigh resident Raymond Te Huia Coe, 30, was charged with burglary.
Both men entered no plea and were remanded on bail until October Investigations found some of the seized kauri gum was legitimately purchased by the pair and it was returned to them.
However, hundreds of kilograms of gum remain with police. Kennett said the seizure was a reminder for people to "be vigilant around the purchase and sale of kauri gum".
She said the gum was particularly valuable at the moment due to high demand from China. Anyone with kauri gum at their property should make sure it was stored securely, she said. She also warned anyone buying kauri gum to ensure it was legitimately obtained. Anyone with information about kauri gum theft should contact police.
